Electric and hybrid vehicle basics

Learn how battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids differ. Explore charging, range and everyday ownership considerations before selecting a used vehicle.

Consider how far you drive, where you park and charge, and how often you take longer trips. Use the EV Advisor to connect those questions to your own routine.

Ask for battery evidence

Request any available battery-health report and the conditions of the test. Compare it with the vehicle history and a test drive; a dashboard range estimate alone does not establish usable capacity.

Confirm remaining warranty

Ask the manufacturer to confirm coverage for this VIN, the in-service date, mileage limits and transfer rules. Get the terms for battery capacity loss as well as battery failure.

Check your charging plan

Identify the charge port, supported AC and DC charging, and manufacturer-approved adapters. Check your regular routes and ask a qualified electrician about home charging before relying on a particular installation cost.

Inspect the whole vehicle

Review title and service records, check recalls by VIN, and inspect tires, brakes and cooling systems. A battery EV still needs maintenance; hybrids and plug-in hybrids also retain engine service requirements.
